Ductless cooling offers some exceptional benefits, including cost savings and higher air quality in your home. Since each area can have its own evaporator, you also have more control over comfort. Even with these great benefits, there are some things you can do to maximize your savings.

Like its name implies, ductless cooling eliminates the ductwork in your cooling system. That’s great news because ductwork is inefficient. It can cause your system to lose nearly one-third of the “cool” that your condenser created! By going with ductless cooling, you’ve already taken a big step toward reclaiming energy efficiency.

Other conditions can cause your system to work harder. They can also cause your house to lose the cool air you’re putting into it. By eliminating these conditions, you can reclaim more of the cool air you’re paying for.

These improvements to maximize ductless cooling

Sealing around the doors, windows, roof, vents, foundation and other openings in your home can help you save energy. By eliminating the air “leaks” in your home, your cool air will stay where you intended it to be.

Insulation is another key step in saving energy. Many older homes were built without any insulation. If insulation is in your home, it may be old, damaged or just insufficient. Adding insulation between walls, in attics, between floors, and around windows, doors and the foundation walls can help reduce heating and cooling losses.

Air leaks aren’t always obvious, so it’s best to have a professional conduct a home energy assessment. Using infrared cameras and special equipment, these folks can find hidden air leaks, weak spots in insulation and other efficiency issues. As a bonus, their equipment can also detect water leaks in plumbing hidden in the walls, and problems with the roof caused by winter ice dams. Added insulation in the roof can correct the conditions that cause ice dams to form. You’ll still need to correct any damage to the roof that’s already been done.

Once the assessment is complete, you’ll know exactly where you need additional insulation, and where to look for wear and damage that can cause your home to be less efficient.

Sealing your home to prevent airflow will allow you to maximize the benefits of ductless heating and cooling. You’ll consume less energy and spend less money year-round. Your home will also be more comfortable. What’s not to like about that?
