For nearly a decade, Massachusetts has lead the entire United States in energy efficiency. In fact, 2019 marked the ninth consecutive year that the Commonwealth received the title of the most energy-efficient state. Massachusetts has made it a priority to push for improved energy efficiency programs, which results in fewer greenhouse gas emissions and significant savings for residents.

The Mass Save® program is one such initiative that’s been proven to be effective in creating a more energy-efficient state. Here, we’ll take a look at what exactly the Mass Save® program is, what it’s trying to achieve, and how New England homeowners can benefit from it.

What is the Mass Save® Program all about?

Mass Save® is an initiative put forward by the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources and various energy providers – such as Eversource, National Grid, Liberty Utilities, Berkshire Gas, Unitil, and Cape Light Compact – to promote energy-saving practices throughout the state. The program is designed to encourage both businesses and homeowners to adopt more energy-efficient solutions to cut down on energy usage and costs.

What are the goals of the program?

The stated goal of the program is to continue reducing demand for CO2 and energy throughout the state within the coming three years. Although Mass Save® can already power over half a million homes with the energy it’s saved thus far, the initiative is still going strong. Here are a few of the strategies currently being implemented to bring about these positive changes:

Technological Innovation

A significant portion of the funding to Mass Save® is being directed towards research efforts aimed at developing new technologies that can help with energy-saving such as energy storage, electric vehicles, and energy-efficient heat pumps.

Workforce Training

The initiative is attempting to offer more energy-efficient job opportunities by providing occupational training and increasing the total number of open positions in the field.

Building Improvements

The Mass Save® program seeks to construct buildings that are more advanced, durable, and efficient.

Homeowner Savings

One of the most impactful Mass Save® strategies for New England homeowners is the deals offered to encourage people to improve their homes’ energy efficiency. These come in the form of discounts, rebates, and other incentives.

How can homeowners benefit from this program?

Although there are many ways to benefit from the Mass Save® program, the HEAT loan is perhaps the best deal currently offered through the initiative. Eligible homeowners can get a loan of up to $25,000 to put towards energy-efficient upgrades in their Boston home, including installing a new energy efficient mini-split heat pump. To sweeten the pot even further, the Mass Save® program is offering the loan without any interest, limiting the financial burden it could put upon homeowners in the future.

How can I qualify for the HEAT loan for a heat pump installation?

A ductless mini-split system comes with many advantages over a standard, centralized HVAC system including improved energy efficiency, greater flexibility, and compact size. In order to obtain the Mass Save® HEAT loan for installing a ductless heat pump, you should follow these steps:

1. Find a licensed heat-pump installer.

The first step is to find a qualified and experienced heat-pump installer like New England Ductless to offer a free estimate for the installation.

2. Submit your documents.

Next, you’ll need to fill out the Intake Form and submit it along with the signed estimate. If everything checks out, an Authorization Form will be sent back to you.

3. Get the HEAT loan.

If approved, you’ll be able to fill out your Authorization Form and submit it to one of the Mass Save® lenders. After processing your request, the lender will give you a check that’s payable to the installer and you.

4. Pay for the installation.

As you would with your own, simply sign the check and make it out to your installation specialist.

5. Apply for more savings.

Although the HEAT loan is a massive advantage, that’s not the only benefit you can get from the Mass Save® program when investing in a mini-split system. After the installation is complete, you can apply for a rebate.
