Living in Arlington, MA, is a great place to raise a family, especially if you want to be close to the hub of the city but far enough out to enjoy some peace and quiet. The owners of this single-family home loved the location of their house, but they were struggling to keep comfortable during the summer months. With increasingly hot temperatures, the summertime was getting unbearable in a home with no cooling system.
After weighing the options, the homeowners decided to call New England Ductless. Our comfort specialists met with the family and were able to design a whole-home system that would provide heating and cooling for year-round comfort.
The Problem: This single-family home in Arlington, MA, needed to have a full ductless mini-split system installed throughout the entire house. There was no cooling system, so the family knew they would need a system for both heating and cooling.
The Solution: The team at New England Ductless installed a whole-home system that provides heating and cooling for the entire house. This multi-zone system will help keep the family comfortable all year long.
The Design
Because of the size of the home, this installation would need two separate systems. Each system would service a portion of the house so that the family could enjoy total comfort all year long.
This design would require two outdoor condenser units and seven indoor units. The indoor units were a combination of wall-mounted ACs and ceiling-mounted ACs. The first system would service the kitchen and living room with a ceiling-mounted AC and a wall-mounted AC in the office.
The second system was designed to provide heating and cooling to the three bedrooms and the basement with wall-mounted ACs. This design would give the family pinpoint control over their comfort anywhere in their home.
The Installation
The first thing the NED comfort specialists did for this installation was to install the outdoor heat pumps. Two outdoor compressor units were installed on concrete pads to keep them stable and easy to access. These heat pumps will serve all of the ductless ACs in the house, providing quality heated or cooled air whenever the owners need it.
Inside the home, the kitchen and living room were equipped with ceiling-mounted units. These ductless ACs fit almost flush with the ceiling to give the room a clean finish while still providing the temperature control the family needs. The ceiling-mounted ductless ACs offer excellent airflow throughout the space.
Additionally, we placed each wall-mounted ACs in a location to give it the best airflow throughout the room. This placement and attention to detail will eliminate hot and cold spots throughout the room, giving superior comfort. Lastly, each of the rooms with floor-mounted ductless ACs, also called low-mounted wall units, will also provide quality heated and cooled air at the touch of a button.
Each of the units was installed and attached to the outdoor heat pumps with thin piping instead of traditional ductwork. The tubing is much easier to install than ductwork and doesn’t require a lot of renovation to the home. Instead, a small hole is drilled in the wall behind the unit, and piping is snaked through the walls to connect to the outdoor heat pump.
The Benefits
The LG ductless mini-split systems installed in this single-family home will help the family enjoy perfectly comfortable heating and cooling throughout their home all year. The high-quality cooling will keep them cool all summer, while the heating can act as a supplemental heating option for the winter. The ductless heating provided by the LG mini-split systems will help to lower heating bills and provide savings for the family during the coldest months.
Additionally, the homeowners were able to apply for a rebate of $10,000 just for upgrading their home with a more energy-efficient system. These savings will help to offset the cost of installation and ensure they see the energy savings more quickly.
Picking an LG ductless system for their home was the perfect choice because it gives them complete control over every room in the house. Because each of the ACs operates separately from the others, they can easily turn off the units in rooms that are not being used to save even more. Every unit is controlled with a remote, so it’s easy to adjust the temperature with the touch of a button.
These units also offer humidity control and air filtering to provide better air quality throughout the home. Now, the family will know that they have invested in the value of their home, which will help them if they ever decide to sell in the future.
